World
Environment Day is celebrated the world over on 5th June every year since 1972
on wards after the resolution passed by United Nations at Stockholm. For the year 2009 the theme is
'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change'.
Hyundai Motor India
Foundation, on account of the World Environment Day on 5th June 2009, had
organized for a special rally by school children to create awareness on Global
warming and to emphasise on the importance of a Greener World. The rally was
organized with an intention of creating Environmental Awareness and to
sensitize the public about issues related to pollution in the town of Sriperumbudur.
A massive
gathering of 2000 school children from Government Boys and Girls high school of Sriperumbudur had assembled in the heart
of the Sriperumbudur town, at the Hyundai Clock Tower. The children carried
placards and banners with slogans on Environmental Awareness. There was a
special focus on reducing the usage of plastics and tobacco.
Smt. D. Yashoda,
Member of Legislative Assembly for Sriperumbudur constituency along with the
Chief Education Officer for KancheepuramDistrict, Mr. V. Ramana had flagged off
the rally along with officials from Hyundai. The procession saw 2000 highly
charged school children crying out slogans on the need for creating a greener
earth.
The rally commenced from Sriperumbudur Hyundai clock tower and covered
an approximate distance of 1.5 km to conclude at the Boys Higher Secondary school,
Sriperumbudur near the RajivGandhi Memorial.
At the end of the rally, the
participants took apledge to protect the environment in all possibleways.
Following this, 50 tree saplings were alsoplanted in the Sriperumbudur Boys
Higher Secondary
School, grounds.
Hyundai Motor India Foundation
had organized for Caps, Pens, and refreshments for all the 2000school children
who had participated in the rally. This Environment Awareness rally was given
wide coverage in the local media in Chennai area.
