A special experience in Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang

When we visited the camp on its second day, the mentors and mentees were about to go on a trip to Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang. Hyundai Motorstudio is a space where you could experience the interesting features about an automotive. When asked to make a pose, expressing their anticipation about the unique experience, the mentors and mentees showed powerful pose. As they spent more time together, they seemed to be much more close to each other.

“Welcome to Hyundai Motorstudio”. The experience began as the people started entering the studio. The mentors and mentees enjoyed time together while experiencing the journey of car production – steel where they saw the materials in cars, stamping where the steel sheet is pressed hard, welding where the robots are moved about to build the automotive structure, painting for coloring on the car and accessory assembly processing.

The mentors and mentees are watching the scene of a robot coloring the car, assembling the chair and attaching the window in very engaging manner. They even responded by applauding at the explanation that the robot takes care of very hard energy required jobs like moving big and heavy accessories and that the skilled technicians are in charge of delicate work like engine and pipeline related tasks. Some of them took pictures of the unforgettable scenes and even taking notes, indulging themselves into the experience.

The trip continued with a session where the participants listened and witnessed the safety technology in an automotive; they took pictures of airbags, which protect the passengers in hidden spots, and some of them took pictures of themselves with the dummy dolls that are used in the safety experiments. The unique experience they had in the design space where there was a gorgeous kinetic ball that moved in dynamic manner to express Hyundai Motor’s design philosophy and the 4D simulator ride of World Rally Championship racing were said to be the best moments selected by the mentors and mentees. Mentee Park Si-eun said, “It was so fun that the time I spent here went so fast,” when asked how she felt about the 1 hr 30 min long experience. She said she wished to come here again with her mentor.

Getting closer with leisure time

For the second program, the mentors and mentees moved to HMC HRD Center, their base camp. With the leisure specialized MC Yoo Chang-geun, every mentor and mentee spent time together and got close to each other. Eight teams, which were divided with rock, scissors and paper, did a bingo game where the first team that deletes one line from the bingo board filled with Korean singers. Other fun games followed like shuttlecock kicking game, balancing a stick on the hand, throwing the shoe in a pot, popping balloons and tissue blowing in order to fill up the bingo space. All mentors and mentees sweated off to do their best; they got closer to each other as they laughed, applauded and cheered for one another.

Sharing the Genuine Advice from Mentors

“Shall we change the mood? Let us hear some stories from our mentors”. Four mentors came up to the stage to give advice on mentees’ concerns about school and career. This program was prepared in the thought that the mentees need to hear some stories not from an expert from the mentors who have gone through the same thoughts and problems.

First came mentor Park Hye-jin, who has some relationship with “Looking for Three Leaf Clover”. She first joined the camp as a mentee when she was a junior in high school in 2013. Then, Hye-jin came to the camp after she went to university and became a mentor. That she was able to overcome the hardships after she met her mentee got much resonance. Like mentor Park Hye-jin, there are more cases of past mentees partaking in the camp as university menotrs.

Mentor Jung Jin-young talked about “how to study”, which is a topic of concern for many mentees. Jung, who entered the medical school with 0.1% score in university entrance examination, gave full depth of studying know-hows. He advised the mentees to find the right studying approach and use study planner to plan the studies and check. To a question, “How can I be enthusiastic in studies?”, mentor Jung said that once realistic goals are set, one would eventually be enthusiastic in studies as he/she realizes the goals. To his comment that detailed goals and strong will are more important than a good brain, everyone applauded in great response.

The third mentor was Jung Ji-hyun. She has set unique goal of becoming “fungi specialist” and is paving her way through. She said she decided to share her story because she wanted to help those mentees who have hard time selecting their career. Her advice was as follows: “Thinking hard on what I like, what I am the best at and how I should live my life.” Her advice that one should focus on the possibility of realizing goals rather than just challenging whatever in finding the career was impressive.

“Do you like magic? I’ve prepared a magic show for you”. Mentor Kim Se-mi showed her magic skills for the mentees. With her magical hands, the heart shape just disappeared, and she even got the number kept in one mentee’s mind correct. The last magic where she delivered the message that she hopes 160 mentors and mentees’ dreams will one day come true like magic came as big impression for all.

Bridging the way to dream through mentoring

The mentors and mentees moved to another venue, and they set a detailed plan on “Looking for Three Leafed Clover” activities on a blank paper. They shared detailed plan about the upcoming eight rounds of mentoring activities, describing the time, venues and activities. Together, the mentor and mentees deeply thought about very program on how to get close to each other and how to find career and aptitude with the mentee’s dreams in the center. They also talked about problems that they may encounter during the journey. Such time will surely be a strong foundation in the upcoming activities of finding dreams.

Also, they got to present their detailed plans. “I will be there with my mentee Ga-hyun in her activities to become a policewoman – from staying fit, police station visit and policeman interview”, said mentor Kang Han-sol, who said she will go through the curriculum with her mentee in seeking the policeman career.

Mentor Lim Yeon-ju, who is a student at university nursing department, surely understands her mentee Lee Min-jin who wants to seek the same career as she does. “To Minjin, who likes to help others, becoming nurse befits her well. I want to do valuable things with her so that the mentoring time could be precious.” Mentee Lee Minjin said that this would be a great chance for both the mentor and mentee to grow together by getting an experience of looking into the life of a nurse at Seoul National University Hospital and Severance Hospital.

Mentor Park Hun-young said that he has promised his mentee Hwang, Chae-young, now a senior in high school, to prepare the university entrance exam together by helping him on physical condition management and choosing the right interview outfit. Both mentee Hwang Chae-young and mentor Park Hun-young share the same dream; it is “teenager adviser” who seeks the career and aptitude of the teenagers and listen to their problems. That they want to cheer each other in realizing dreams really came as warmth.

Mentor Lee Sung-chan planned a “Commissioned Officer Program” which entails the meeting with current soldiers and military camp, indeed a valuable program for his mentee Young Woong who dreams of becoming a commissioned officer. “Actually it’s been three years since I got out of the army, so I don’t feel like going to the military camp. But, I will surely sacrifice myself for mentee Young Woong”, showing a sense of humor.

There were many mentors and mentees who planned for “partnered mentoring”. Those friends who share similar career dreams or goals will get together to get close to each other and go through the same curriculum whether or not they live close to each other. Much synergy is expected as the mentors and mentees planned this on their own.

Pledge solidifies the will upon commitment for each other

After establishing the mentoring plan, the mentors and mentees got to write pledge in commitment of the upcoming activities. The mentors and mentees promised each other that they will both roll out activities in sincere manner. The mentors and mentees, who exchanged their pledge, looked into each other in affection.

“Our rules will kept by ourselves!” The mentors and mentees also came up with team regulations they need to obey during the period of “Looking for Three Leaf Clover”. The piece of rules included love from head to toe, eating delicious foods in each meeting, do not lie, do not see the mobile phones during dialogue and do not give up until end, which were all rules for positive change. “As long as we continue being considerate for one another, we will have a beautiful ending”, said mentee Kim Hyun jung. Like her comment, when a mentor and mentee try to be sincere to each other and commit themselves, all of them will surely meet the happiness of three-leafed clover.

The second day of "Looking for Three-Leaf Clover Mentoring Camp" wrapped up with the event where the mentors and mentees of the similar region got together. The mentors and mentees seemed very bright on their way back to the accommodation. We hope that the mentors and mentees would complete their beautiful journey with what they have earned and learned in the camp. Hyundai Motor's "Looking for Three-Leaf Clover Mentoring Camp" will continue until our students search "happiness in everyday life", which is represented by three-leaf clover. Please join us in cheering the teenagers from traffic accident victim family to search for their genuine happiness and confront with their own dreams.

[Mini Interview 1] Mentor Park Hye-jin and Mentee Sul Da-eun

Q) You have now changed from a mentee to a mentor. What kind of mentor do you want to be?

Mentor Park Hye-jin: A mentor who understands mentee Daeun the most. Like my mentor, who energized me up, I want to be her sister who can have emotional exchange with her during teen years. I believe that I understand how a mentee feels, so I think I could understand mentee Daeun and fulfill her.

Q) Is there anything you want from mentor Hye-jin?

Mentee Sul Da-eun: I am quite introvert and I don’t talk that much. So sometimes, I have hard time in communicating. I hope mentor Hye-jin talks to me first and waits for me like she does now. It will surely require some time, but once time passes, I will approach to her first.

Mentee Kyun Yena: I lack in confidence; so after this program, I hope I would be better off in introducing what type of person I am. To Minju, I want to become a friend like younger sister whom she can communicate with well.
